Unboxing a Rolex Daytona 116503 – Our First Impression
There’s always a moment when a Daytona arrives, whatever the variation. The outer box comes off, then the green Rolex presentation box. Before it’s opened, you obviously know what’s inside — but that doesn’t stop it feeling special every time. We would all love a Daytona, right?
This time, we have a Rolex Daytona 116503, the bi-metal variation with a crisp white dial.
First Look at the Daytona 116503
Once the watch is out of the box, the proportions always work. The 40mm case wears exactly as a Daytona should — compact, balanced, and almost familiar. It feels like you could wear it daily. The yellow gold bezel on this model changes the character completely. I’m normally a steel guy, but the bi-metal gives the watch a lustre that steel Daytonas simply don’t have.
The white dial keeps everything crisp and readable. The contrast between the gold markers, the gold bezel, and the steel case works particularly well in natural light. It’s one of those watches that looks very different in person compared to online images. Interestingly, when the sub-dials catch certain angles of light, they reveal a subtle rainbow effect — a playful detail that adds another layer of character to the watch in person.
Opening the Box
Lifting the lid, the first thing you notice is how clean the watch looks sitting in the box.
The combination of stainless steel and yellow gold catches the light immediately, but in a much softer way than you’d expect if you’ve only ever seen photos online.
Inside the box, this model has a 2016 warranty card, Daytona booklet, and swing tags. This is a complete U.K. set and tells you straight away the watch has been looked after.
On the Wrist
On the wrist, the Daytona 116503 feels far less “flashy” than I expect. It’s more classy than flashy. The gold elements don’t take over the watch; they complement it. It’s comfortable thanks to its case depth, and the curves of the case back against the wrist are more pleasant than a GMT or Sub. Still solid, unmistakably a Rolex, but with a slightly more relaxed presence.
We often see clients come in convinced they want a steel Daytona — most people’s ‘grail.’ If we have a bi-metal in stock, it always turns heads. A reminder that a Daytona is always special.
Condition and Details
Taking a closer look, the case lines are sharp, the bracelet feels tight, and the bezel is clean. This model has been lightly refurbished, so it’s very clean but had never been polished since new. These are the details we always focus on because they matter long-term.
The movement is, as ever, exactly what you’d expect — reliable, proven, and one of Rolex’s best chronograph movements. This reference may be bi-metal, but mechanically it’s every bit the same Daytona.
Final Thoughts
Unboxing a Rolex Daytona 116503 is a good example of why we encourage people to see watches in person where possible. Pictures don’t always fully represent the watch. It’s often misunderstood online, but once it’s out of the box and on the wrist, it tends to speak for itself — calm, confident, and wearable without trying too hard to get noticed.
